This will always be one of those "what if" books for me. I say that because it had such promise--terrific writing on a fantastic subject; but somewhere along the line, somebody dropped the ball. Hard.I actually don't have a problem with the bulk of the book reproducing Motherwell's works in black and white, with a color signature in the center. That I could live with. What's inexcusable, however, is that the color reproductions are a travesty--10 were inadvertently cropped off at the top, while one was reproduced completely upside down. Columbia University Press actually included a printed regret sheet, pointing out these errors, and clearly they wish the book could lose its botched color section entirely. Nonetheless, it's still being sold at an exorbitant price, even on Amazon (currently $68). Frankly, even without the printing snafus, it wouldn't be worth that much."A+" for the writing, but a resounding "F" for the final product, unfortunately.
