About this book

Timed to the publication of the author's new illustrated children's book, A Family of Poems, the national bestseller is now available in a specially priced gift edition Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis loved literature, especially poetry. "Once you can express yourself," she wrote, "you can tell the world what you want from it. All the changes in the world, for good or evil, were first brought about by words." Now, Caroline Kennedy shares her mother's favorite poems and the worlds behind her strong belief in the power of literature. A wonderful volume for reading aloud or by yourself, a meaningful gift or keepsake, The Best-Loved Poems of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis offers an intimate view of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' world, and a poignant glimpse into her heart.

Reader's Thoughts

Completely loved listening to this collection of poems, read by many articulate readers and actors. I reconnected with so many poems I had been introduced to in childhood, but with greater appreciation now than then. Highly recommend listening rather than reading unless you read poetry better than the actors. I will listen again because they are worth a repeat. I especially loved Caroline's anecdotes about several poems.

First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was an icon in American history. She was always very private about her role as "mother" in the White House. In this collection, Caroline gave us a glimpse into that private time. It illustrated just how "hands on" she was. I loved it.

Was shocked to discover I like Yeats! Who knew?

Caroline Kennedy gathered a collection of poems around varied themes and added her own commentary. For the most part I enjoyed the poems, discovered new friends and renewed an appreciation for others. If you are a fan of the Kennedy family the insights offered are interesting.

The book is filled with quality poetry... poetry that should be absorbed by any thinking person... but that isn't the pearl. The context that Caroline affixed to them was the key to the love in which they may be given.

Jackie Kennedy loved literature and poetry and instilled that in her children. For holidays and birthdays she had them memorize and recite a poem to her. In this book Caroline Kennedy selected the poems that her mother loved best. The book is filled with beautiful poems and photos of the Kennedy family. A truly beautiful book.

This was a surprise to me. I was surprised by the former first lady's choices, both of poets and poems. Caroline Kennedy's sections were brief but meaningful and did not overwhelm the actual collection itself. I am glad I picked this up.

I recently decided that I want to read (and perhaps memorize) more poetry and this seemed like a good collection to start with. It did not to disappoint. There was enough variety so as to make it a good introduction for those readers who may be unfamiliar or uncomfortable with poetry. Pretty good. I would defiantly recommend.

I am not necessarily a poem person, but enjoyed reading some of Jackie Kennedy's favorites. They are varied and some are lovely. She certainly had an appreciation for all kinds of writings.

I enjoyed reading these poems, and learning that Jacqueline Kennedy had poetry nights at the White House. She had her little children pick out poems they liked, and had them memorize them, and present them to the family. Some of the poems were some of the first poems I was introduced to as a young child in school. I have been reading the poems over a long period of time, which was a good way to read them. I was able to buy this book at our local public library book sale. I bought a grocery bag full of books for $1.00.

The obvious review is that this is a book for die-hard fans of Mrs. Kennedy, but it really isn't only limited to that audience. Her choices of poetry that she read to her children when young are interesting enough, but Mrs. Kennedy had genuinely good taste in her own reading (albeit the reader can't help wondering if Caroline edited out the more avant-garde poets. Still, worth perusing, if only for the "oh, you liked that too?" moments that will occur. Hence the deduction that she had genuinely good taste!

I honestly never really had an appreciation of poetry until I got this book. Jackie O epitomizes grace to me in a lot of ways and I was eager to see what poets had influenced her. It's divided into chapters like adventure and love so you can retreat to a particular section when I'm feeling a particular mood. I read a few poems a night before I go to bed. Believe me, it's much more relaxing and thought-provoking than letting the TV be the last thing you take in before you go to sleep :)

A wonderful collection of poems.

I never tire of reading these poems & often carry the book with me. The introduction to each paragraph is well-written and for an admirer of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (as I have been since 1964)these introductions provide an insight into Mrs. Onassis's personality as observed by her daughter. It would be a wonderful gift for a graduate, a bibliophile, a poetry lover and others who love literature.

This was such a good book. There are lots of different kind of poems in this book. It is a great book to get introduce into poetry. I am going to buy this book for my collection.
